Introduction to CAZy      [ CAZyme products offered by Prozomix ]

Over the last 17 years the CAZy (Carbohydrate-Active EnZymes) database (http://www.cazy.org/), that describes the families of structurally-related catalytic and carbohydrate-binding modules (or functional domains) of enzymes that degrade, modify, or create glycosidic bonds, has been continually developed.  As family membership is based on the analysis of amino acid sequence, the CAZy database continues to prove especially invaluable as a research tool with respect to the ever increasing amount of genomic information relating to carbohydrate metabolism.  Not surprisingly then, CAZy nomenclature achieved rapid adoption by the research community and has become a norm when describing carbohydrate-active enzymes.

The CAZy database organises carbohydrate-active enzymes into families of glycoside hydrolases (GHs), glycosyltransferases (GTs), polysaccharide lyases (PLs), carbohydrate esterases (CEs), and carbohydrate binding modules (CBMs).  For some families, where data allows, classification is extended to the subfamily level, for example see glycoside hydrolase family 13 (GH13), for which 32 subfamilies have so far been defined!

The CAZy database is an unparalleled research tool when studying genes of unknown function, or as to date poorly characterised enzymes/proteins, as easy to navigate key data regarding all other family members is visible.  For instance, membership of a family instantly indicates 3-D structure, identification key catalytic residues and stereochemical outcome of catalysis.  Furthermore, a rapid survey of known enzyme activities (based on IUBMB Enzyme Nomenclature) involves no more than either scrolling down the page of information, or looking in the summary information provided at the top of each CAZy database page.

CAZy enzymes offered by Prozomix

The Prozomix recombinant enzyme/protein product range can be rapidly browsed using our CAZy filter.  CAZy nomenclature, down to subfamily information where available, is also applied at all levels of our product listings.  Alternatively, look for the "PROZOMIX" link located at the top of family pages under "Commercial Enzyme Provider(s)" when browsing the CAZy database.  Such links will take you directly to a Prozomix product listing detailing all enzymes either available or under-development from that particular family.  You can also BLAST a CAZy protein sequence against our range of recombinant enzymes and proteins, and subsequently browse sequence alignments and scores of Prozomix products against your primary sequence.

Prozomix currently offers a large number of enzymes that fall into the following CAZy families (red numbers):

The Prozomix Commercial Academic Partner (CAP) Programme

Our in-house R&D activities are currently focusing on populating CAZy families for which we currently do not offer any members.  Should you have any plasmids encoding CAZy enzymes we would thus be very interested to work with you; the Prozomix Commercial Academic Partner (CAP) Program enables rapid and hassle-free commercialisation of academic plasmids encoding recombinant enzymes/proteins of any description.  The process is very simple and fast, and returns a very generous 17.5 % royalty on all sales.  Commercialisation in achieved within 3 months.  Please see our CAP pages for further details.
